1. Team Building Fundamentals
Before diving into specific compositions, understand the three-role framework that every viable team follows:
| Role | Function | Typical Paths | Slot Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage Dealer | Primary source of damage output | Hunt, Destruction, Erudition | 1 (required) |
| Support / Amplifier | Buffs team DMG, debuffs enemies, enables mechanics | Harmony, Nihility | 1-2 (at least 1) |
| Sustain | Keeps the team alive through healing or shields | Preservation, Abundance | 1 (required) |
F2P Team Template: DPS + Support + Sustain + Flex. The flex slot can be a second support (for maximum damage), a sub-DPS (for breaking multiple weaknesses), or a second sustain (for difficult survival checks). Start with double sustain until you're comfortable with enemy patterns, then swap to double support for faster clears.
2. Team 1: Beginner Core
Fire Trailblazer Sustain — Your First Reliable Team
This is the team every F2P account should build first. Every character is guaranteed free through story progression. It clears all story content, Simulated Universe through World 6, and Forgotten Hall through Floor 10.
Detailed Build
| Character | Light Cone | Relic Set | Planar Set | Main Stats | Key Traces |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fire TB | Moment of Victory / Day One of My New Life / Amber (3★) | 4pc Knight of Purity Palace | Belobog of the Architects | DEF% / DEF% / DEF% | Talent > Skill > Ultimate |
| Natasha | Post-Op Conversation / Quid Pro Quo / Cornucopia (3★) | 4pc Passerby of Wandering Cloud | Fleet of the Ageless | Outgoing Healing / HP% / HP% | Ultimate > Skill > Talent |
| Dan Heng | Cruising in the Stellar Sea (Herta Store) / Only Silence Remains / Swordplay | 4pc Musketeer of Wild Wheat | Space Sealing Station / Rutilant Arena | ATK% / Wind DMG / CRIT Rate | Ultimate > Talent > Skill |
| Asta | Meshing Cogs (3★) / Dance! Dance! Dance! / Memories of the Past | 4pc Messenger Traversing Hackerspace | Broken Keel / Fleet of the Ageless | HP% / HP% / Energy Regen | Ultimate > Talent > Skill |
Rotation
Standard rotation (4-cycle for most fights):
Asta Ultimate → Fire TB Skill (taunt) → Dan Heng Skill → Natasha Basic → Asta Skill → Fire TB Basic → Dan Heng Ultimate + Skill → Repeat
Key insight: Asta's SPD buff (Ultimate) is the engine of this team. Always cast it before your DPS takes their turn. With 4pc Hackerspace, Asta gives the entire team +12% SPD on Ultimate — this adds up to roughly 1 extra Dan Heng turn per 4 cycles.
Content Fit: Story, Calyx farming, Simulated Universe (Preservation path recommended for this team), Forgotten Hall Floors 1-10. Not recommended for high-level Memory of Chaos due to low damage ceiling, but excellent for all early-to-mid game content.
3. Team 2: Super Break F2P
Harmony Trailblazer Engine — Meta Budget Team
Super Break is the most F2P-accessible meta archetype in Star Rail. Harmony Trailblazer (unlocked during Penacony story) enables the entire team to deal bonus damage when attacking Broken enemies. This team rivals limited 5-star comps at a fraction of the cost.
Detailed Build
| Character | Light Cone | Relic Set | Planar Set | Main Stats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harmony TB | Memories of the Past / Meshing Cogs (3★) | 4pc Watchmaker, Master of Dream Machinations | Talia: Kingdom of Banditry | HP% / HP% / Energy Regen |
| Gallagher | What Is Real? / Post-Op Conversation / Multiplication (3★) | 2pc Messenger + 2pc Watchmaker | Broken Keel / Forge of Kalpagni | Outgoing Healing / SPD / Energy Regen |
| Herta | Geniuses' Repose / The Seriousness of Breakfast / Herta Store Erudition cone | 4pc Thief of Shooting Meteor | Space Sealing Station / Talia | ATK% / Ice DMG / CRIT Rate |
| Asta | Meshing Cogs (3★) / Dance! Dance! Dance! | 4pc Messenger Traversing Hackerspace | Broken Keel | HP% / HP% / Energy Regen |
Rotation
Break priority rotation:
Harmony TB Skill → Gallagher Basic (apply Besotted) → Asta Skill → Herta Skill → Harmony TB Ultimate → Asta Ultimate → Everyone attacks the Broken enemy
Core principle: Harmony TB's Ultimate applies a buff to all allies: attacking Weakness Broken enemies deals Super Break DMG equal to 100% of the attack's Toughness Reduction × Break Effect. Your goal is to break enemies as fast as possible, then unload during the Break window. This team's damage is backloaded — slow starters, devastating finishers.
Performance Note: With 4pc Watchmaker on Harmony TB (+30% Break Effect to team on Ultimate), this team can output damage comparable to a low-investment limited 5-star team. The key differentiator is Break Effect stacking — aim for 150%+ Break Effect on Harmony TB.
4. Team 3: DoT Foundation
Wind & Lightning — Damage Over Time Core
DoT (Damage over Time) teams apply debuffs that deal damage at the start of each enemy turn. This archetype scales exceptionally well in multi-wave content and Simulated Universe (Nihility path).
Detailed Build
| Character | Light Cone | Relic Set | Planar Set | Main Stats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sampo | Eyes of the Prey / Good Night and Sleep Well / Fermata | 4pc Prisoner in Deep Confinement | Pan-Cosmic Commercial Enterprise / Space Sealing Station | ATK% / Wind DMG / ATK% |
| Serval | Geniuses' Repose / The Seriousness of Breakfast | 4pc Prisoner in Deep Confinement | Space Sealing Station | ATK% / Lightning DMG / CRIT Rate |
| Asta | Meshing Cogs (3★) | 4pc Messenger | Broken Keel | HP% / HP% / Energy Regen |
| Natasha | Post-Op Conversation / Quid Pro Quo | 4pc Passerby | Fleet of the Ageless | Outgoing Healing / HP% / HP% |
Rotation
Sampo Skill (apply Wind Shear stacks) → Serval Skill (apply Shock) → Asta Ultimate → Asta Skill → Natasha Basic → Sampo Ultimate (detonate all DoTs) → Serval Ultimate (extend Shock duration)
Stack management: Sampo's Wind Shear stacks up to 5 times. His Ultimate detonates all current DoT effects on enemies for a percentage of their total remaining damage. The ideal sequence: apply 5 Wind Shear stacks → apply Shock → Ultimate detonation.
Content Fit: Excels in multi-wave content and Simulated Universe (Nihility path). Weaker in single-target boss fights where DoT ramp-up time limits efficiency. Best paired with Nihility blessings that trigger additional DoT procs.
5. Team 4: Follow-Up Core
Herta Spin-to-Win — Pure Fiction Specialist
Pure Fiction is an endgame mode where enemies continuously spawn in waves. Herta's talent — performing a follow-up attack whenever an enemy drops below 50% HP — makes her the best free character for this mode. Combined with March 7th's counter follow-ups, this team chains attacks automatically.
Build Highlights
| Character | Key Setup | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Herta | 4pc The Ashblazing Grand Duke, ATK% / Ice DMG / CRIT Rate | Grand Duke set gives +8% ATK per follow-up hit, stacking 8 times — Herta chains 5 follow-ups per wave cycle, fully stacking this instantly |
| March 7th | DEF% focus, 4pc Knight of Purity Palace | Shield yourself or a teammate being targeted. When the shielded ally is hit, March performs a counter — applying Ice weakness and chipping Toughness |
| Pela (alternative) | Resolution Shines As Pearls of Sweat LC, 4pc Eagle of Twilight Line | Pela's Ultimate removes all enemy buffs and applies AoE DEF reduction. Against Mara-struck enemies in Luofu content, this is devastating |
Pure Fiction Optimization: In Pure Fiction, you score points by killing enemies. Herta's follow-up triggers every time any enemy drops below 50% — meaning her spin can trigger multiple times from one AoE attack. Run this team with Erudition blessings in Simulated Universe for exponential damage scaling.
6. Team 5: Hypercarry Budget
Qingque / Dan Heng — Single Target Specialist
Hypercarry teams funnel all buffs into a single damage dealer. This is the highest single-target damage F2P archetype and scales best with relic investment.
Qingque at E4+ is the best 4-star hypercarry in the game. Her E4 gives a 50% fixed chance for a follow-up attack after using Enhanced Basic ATK — and this follow-up can trigger another follow-up, chaining for massive damage. At E6, she refunds a Skill Point after using her Skill, eliminating her SP consumption issue.
Build
| Character | Light Cone | Relic Set | Main Stats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qingque | Geniuses' Repose / The Seriousness of Breakfast | 4pc Genius of Brilliant Stars | ATK% / Quantum DMG / CRIT Rate |
| Tingyun | Meshing Cogs (3★) / Dance! Dance! Dance! | 4pc Messenger | ATK% / ATK% / ATK% |
| Pela | Resolution Shines As Pearls / Before the Tutorial Mission Starts | 4pc Eagle of Twilight Line | Effect Hit Rate / Ice DMG / Energy Regen |
Qingque Rotation
Tingyun Skill (buff QQ) → Pela Ultimate (DEF shred) → Qingque Skill × N (until 4-of-a-kind or SP depleted) → Qingque Enhanced Basic → Repeat
SP management: Qingque's Skill draws 2 tiles. You need 4 matching tiles for her Enhanced Basic (Hidden Hand). On average, this takes 2-3 Skill uses per turn. At E6, she refunds 1 SP. The rest of the team must be SP-positive: Tingyun uses Skill every 3 turns, Pela uses only Basic attacks (her Ultimate charges from her talent). Natasha never uses Skill unless emergency healing is needed.
Qingque Disclaimer: She is RNG-dependent. Some turns you draw 4-of-a-kind instantly; other turns you burn 4 SP and get nothing. This inconsistency makes her frustrating for Memory of Chaos speed-clears but exceptionally fun for casual content. Dan Heng is the more consistent (but lower-ceiling) alternative.
7. Team Comparison Matrix
| Team | ST Damage | AoE | Auto-Friendly | RoI | Best Mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner Core | ★★★ | ★★ | ★★★★★ | Highest | Story / SU |
| Super Break F2P | ★★★★ | ★★★★ | ★★ | Very High | MoC / AS |
| DoT Foundation | ★★ | ★★★★ | ★★★ | High | SU (Nihility) |
| Follow-Up Core | ★★ | ★★★★★ | ★★★★ | High | Pure Fiction |
| Hypercarry Budget | ★★★★★ | ★★ | ★★ | High | MoC Bosses |
RoI = Return on Investment: How much power you get per Trailblaze Power spent. Beginner Core has the highest RoI because it uses guaranteed free characters with simple builds. Hypercarry teams require the most relic optimization but deliver the highest single-target ceiling.
8. Upgrade Paths: Replace with Limited 5-Stars
As you accumulate Stellar Jade, each of these teams has a natural upgrade path. Here's what to pull for:
| F2P Team | First Upgrade | Replaces | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner Core | Any limited Sustain (Aventurine, Luocha, Huohuo, Fu Xuan) | Natasha | Limited sustains provide team-wide utility beyond healing — Aventurine gives Effect RES, Fu Xuan gives CRIT Rate and damage sharing, Huohuo gives Energy and ATK |
| Super Break F2P | Ruan Mei (Harmony) | Asta | Ruan Mei provides Break Efficiency (+50% Toughness damage), extended Break duration, and team DMG% — all core Super Break stats |
| DoT Foundation | Kafka (Nihility) | Serval | Kafka's Skill and Ultimate detonate all DoTs on enemies — this is the mechanic that makes DoT teams competitive. She's the single most important pull for this archetype |
| Follow-Up Core | Robin (Harmony) / Topaz (Hunt) | Asta | Robin gives team-wide follow-up attack CRIT DMG and action advance; Topaz marks enemies to take increased follow-up damage |
| Hypercarry Budget | Your favorite limited DPS | Qingque / Dan Heng | Any limited Hunt/Destruction character outperforms 4-star hypercarries with equal investment |
F2P Pull Priority: 1 Limited Sustain → 2 Limited Harmony (Ruan Mei / Robin / Sunday) → 3 Limited DPS. A premium sustain and support will elevate EVERY team you build. A premium DPS elevates only one team. Prioritize account-wide value.
